Civil War-era Colt 1849 Pocket Percussion Revolver in .31 Caliber with desirable 6 shot cylinder and a 5" octagonal barrel that gives this revolver a well-balanced look. Serial number is in the 235,000 range and was manufactured at the height of the Civil War in 1863. All numbers match except wedge which is a replacement. This gun appears to be a recent attic find and in spite of some careless nicks and dings and/or abuse, does not show a great deal of use with significant amounts of original finish remaining. When we got this gun, it looked as though it hadn't been cleaned since the 19th century...there were still grains of ancient black powder down in the action and the cylinder had been frozen to the arbor pin for probably decades. We were very careful with this one, and with a little finesse, we now have everything back in working order.
Overall condition is NRA Antique Very Good with 15-20% darkened original case colors on the frame. The balance has hazed over to a smooth light brown patina but if you put a light coat of oil on it, you can still see more faint patterns of the original colors across much of the frame. Good traces of original case colors on the loading lever and back of hammer. The barrel has approximately 20% speckled blue remaining...mainly across the sides of the lug with smaller amounts on the flats of the octagon barrel. There are a number of small dings on the barrel from abuse. Nice New York barrel address. Cylinder has about 85% of the stagecoach robbery roll-engraved scene and has turned to a light brown patina. Very nice brass gripstraps with still retains 40% original silver plating, 25% on the backstrap, and 75% on the bottomstrap. The grips are nearly flawless retaining 97% strong original varnish. "31 Cal. marked on the left side of the triggerguard. A decent example of the Colt 1849 with some original finish!
